About Large Bow Shackles
Bow shackles are ideal when the pull of the lifting application is at an angle. These large bow shackles have a bigger rounded saddle area, perfect for seating a sling or two comfortably. They are able to be used at angles under 90 degrees from vertical. Although apart from lifting straight up, all angles will encumber the stated working load limit (WLL), and need a reduction. Up to 45 degrees from vertical reduce the WLL by 30% (or 70% of the original WLL) Above 45 and below 90 degrees you should reduce the WLL by 50%.
Where two slings are used, when attached to the load the angle between the two slings should be no more than 120 degrees(see Image).
Choosing The Bow Shackle Type
When choosing between a standard screw pin and a safety bolt lifting shackle there are a few things you should consider.
Firstly, do you need a connection that is quick and easy to attach and remove. So that the shackle cam be used on multiple tasks? Or, do you need a semi-permanent connection which is safer to be left in the same set up for longer periods?
If the answer is quick and easy for multiple tasks, you should choose a screw pin type large bow shackle. If the answer is the semi permanent connection then a safety bolt type large bow shackle would suit your needs better.
Screw pin shackles need to be checked on a frequent basis to ensure the pin remains tightly screwed in. (they can potentially come loose due to vibrations etc. during the lift). Safety bolt large bow shackles are held in place via a nut with a cotter pin through. This prevents the risk of loosening and falling out. Safety bolt shackles take a little longer to fit and removal will probably require a pair of pliers to remove the safety cotter pin.
Large Bow Shackle Sizes
As stated above, each shackle comes in a wide choice of working load limits. From 0.15 up to 15 tonne and many options in-between. The shackle dimensions will have particular importance in your choice. Because as you increase the WLL you increase the size physically. Therefore you must consult the specification tables where you will find all the dimensions for each WLL. Thus enabling you to choose a shackle that will suit your load limit and size of hooks and slings that will be used in your lifting application.
Other Associated Equipment
Shackles come in many varieties but Lifting Hoists Direct have narrowed down the choice to the most popular ones used in lifting applications, like the above or our green pin shackles.
Shackles are commonly associated with other lifting equipment such as lifting slings of all types. We stock chain, flat web and round slings to suit most everyday tasks. Plate lifting clamps help to lift sheet materials and beam trolleys help to anchor your hoist to a beam.
